Use the waste hierarchy, segregation, spill prevention and water-efficiency thinking in day-to-day work.
Core idea
Environmental control starts before waste reaches a skip. Plan quantities, protect materials from damage, reuse suitable items, segregate recoverable waste and dispose of the remainder through the authorised route. Preventing leaks, spills and unnecessary water use is part of the job, not a separate clean-up task.
What to recognise
- Apply prevent, prepare for reuse, recycle, recover and dispose in that order where practicable.
- Separate metals, clean packaging, plasterboard, hazardous waste and general waste as the site plan requires.
- Keep oils, chemicals and contaminated absorbents out of drains and ordinary skips.
- Store materials so weather or impact does not turn usable stock into waste.
- Isolate and repair uncontrolled water loss promptly, then check for hidden damage.
Apply it
Before starting, identify likely offcuts, packaging, removed equipment and any hazardous residues. Set aside labelled containers and agree the removal route. During the task, measure before cutting and retain usable lengths. Finish by recording transfers where required and leaving drains and ground free from contamination.
Keep the boundary clear
A product being recyclable does not mean it belongs in any recycling container. Follow the site waste plan, carrier and hazardous-waste rules. Never pour treatment chemicals, glycol, oil or refrigerant residues into a surface-water or foul drain without an authorised route.
