The emergency control valve, meter-box ventilation and why they exist.
The emergency control valve (ECV) is the means of shutting off the gas supply to the installation in an emergency. It must be readily accessible, operable by hand, and clearly identifiable, with an attached notice telling the user what to do in a gas emergency.
External meter boxes are ventilated (typically low level) so that any escaped gas can disperse rather than collect. After meter or pipework changes, a tightness test confirms the installation is gas-tight before use.
